Classic Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Sandwich
The ultimate breakfast sandwich – salty, crispy bacon, a perfectly cooked egg, and melty cheese stacked between warm bread. It’s simple, satisfying, and endlessly customizable.
Ingredients (for 1 sandwich)
-
2–3 slices bacon
-
1 large egg
-
1 slice American, cheddar, or pepper jack cheese
-
1 soft roll, English muffin, or 2 slices of bread
-
Butter or oil, for cooking
-
Salt and black pepper to taste
-
Optional extras: hot sauce, ketchup, sliced avocado, tomato, or lettuce
Instructions
-
Cook the bacon: In a skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Pour off most of the bacon fat, leaving a thin coating in the pan (for toasting the bread and cooking the egg).
-
Toast the bread: Lightly butter the cut sides of your roll or bread. Toast in the skillet or in a toaster until golden.
-
Cook the egg: Crack the egg into the same skillet over medium-low heat. For a sandwich-friendly egg, you can:
-
Scramble it: Lightly beat the egg with a pinch of salt and pepper, pour into the pan, and cook gently until set but still soft.
-
Fry it: Cook until the white is set but the yolk is still runny (sunny-side up), or flip for over-easy/over-medium.
-
Make a folded omelet: Pour beaten egg into the pan, let it set slightly, then fold it into a square-ish shape to fit the bread.
-
-
Melt the cheese: Place the cheese slice on the cooked egg while it’s still in the pan. Cover with a lid or a heatproof bowl for 30 seconds to melt.
-
Assemble: Place the bacon on the bottom piece of toasted bread. Carefully slide the egg with melted cheese on top. Add any extra toppings or condiments. Top with the other bread half.
-
Serve immediately.
Tips for the Best Sandwich
-
Bread choice matters: Brioche, kaiser rolls, English muffins, sourdough, or a classic bagel all work wonderfully.
-
Egg texture: For maximum melt-in-your-mouth results, keep the egg slightly soft. A runny yolk makes a delicious sauce.
-
Cheese melt: American cheese melts the creamiest, but cheddar, gouda, provolone, or Swiss are also excellent.
-
Batch cooking: For a crowd, cook bacon in the oven at 400°F (200°C) on a baking sheet for 15–20 minutes. Scramble several eggs at once in a larger pan.
-
Make it ahead: Cook components and store separately, then reheat and assemble quickly in the morning.
Perfect for breakfast on the go, a weekend brunch, or even a quick dinner—this sandwich never disappoints. Enjoy!
